Positive Youth Development and Volunteers

Growing Confident, Capable Young People Through 4‑H

4‑H is built on the principles of Positive Youth Development (PYD)—a proven, research‑based approach that combines effective youth development practices with the science of how young people learn and grow. This foundation shows that when youth take part in high‑quality 4‑H programs, they are more likely to thrive—and thriving youth are more likely to achieve key developmental milestones that set them up for lifelong success.

The 4‑H Youth Development Model guides everything we do, shaping program quality, curriculum design, and how we measure outcomes to ensure meaningful experiences for every young person.

Volunteers: The Heart of 4‑H

More than 6 million 4‑H youth rely on the dedication of caring volunteers who mentor, teach, and support them. Volunteers are recruited, trained, and supported through local 4‑H offices, and each year, state 4‑H programs honor exceptional service by nominating two outstanding volunteers for the 4‑H Salute to Excellence Awards.

The 4‑H Thriving Model

The 4‑H Thriving Model explains how positive youth development happens within 4‑H. It connects high‑quality learning environments with the conditions that help young people flourish. Rooted in decades of youth development research, the Thriving Model expands on the well‑known 5Cs framework—Competence, Confidence, Connection, Character, and Caring.

Evolving to Meet Youth Needs

4‑H continually strengthens and advances its youth development practices across the national program. By focusing on the needs of young people, 4‑H helps them:

  • Build and master new skills
  • Gain confidence in themselves
  • Explore leadership opportunities
  • Make healthy, informed, and responsible decisions

Through these experiences, 4‑H empowers youth to become leaders and problem‑solvers in their communities and beyond.
